About Kagongo
Music Hall

Bringing Classical Music and Jazz to the Shagz

The Beginning

Why Kagongo Exists

Kagongo Music Hall was born from a conviction that Nairobi, a city of extraordinary musical culture, deserves a world-class room built specifically for the act of listening. Not a club or a bar, not a multipurpose auditorium or hotel lobby. A warm, intimate hall shaped by the community, for the community.

The name Kagongo carries local meaning and identity, rooting the hall firmly in its community along the river valley, just outside Gachie in Kiambu County. As a former church, the building carries its own acoustical memory: decades of voices in choir, of music filling the stone walls, of sound that was created by the people, and was meant to move people.

We have transformed that space into something new, while honouring what it always was: a room that asks you to be present.

Our Mission

Music as a Primary Art

We programme classical and jazz music as primary art forms: not background, not ambient. Our concerts are designed to be heard in full, in silence, with intention.

We believe that intimacy is itself a kind of acoustic. When 80 people share a room with four musicians, something happens that cannot be reproduced in a 2,000-seat auditorium. That proximity is our programme.

Kagongo programmes both international artists performing in Nairobi and Kenyan musicians performing at the level of the world stage, because we believe both belong in the same room, and on the same bill.

Classical & Jazz

Our core programme spans the chamber music repertoire and the jazz tradition, two art forms that share a commitment to mastery, nuance, and the live moment.

Kenyan & International

We present Kenyan musicians alongside international artists, building a concert hall culture rooted in local identity and connected to global excellence.

Intimate & Focused

Every programming decision is made in service of the listening experience. Fewer, better concerts in a room that earns your full attention.

The Space

A Converted Church in Gachie

The building that houses Kagongo Music Hall was originally constructed as a church in Gachie, a community in Kiambu County on the outskirts of Nairobi. Stone walls, high ceilings, and the natural acoustic properties of the space made it an ideal candidate for transformation into a concert hall.

The conversion preserved the character of the building while introducing the technical and physical requirements of a serious performance space: a dedicated stage, professional lighting and sound infrastructure, raked seating that places every audience member in direct visual and acoustic contact with the performers, and an environment that is comfortable without being anonymous.

The result is a hall that feels like it has always been there; one that carries the weight of the past while serving the needs of the present.
